In this tutorial, we will see a tip that may help you get rid of the blank/black screen that shows up after installing the Nvidia restricted driver under Ubuntu 16.10/16.04 or Linux Mint 18 or older.

Getting Started

While your monitor shows a black/blank display, press CTRL+ALT+F1 to enable CLI mode and run this command to remove all installed nvidia drivers:

sudo apt remove --purge nvidia-*
sudo apt remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nv xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Now install the Nvidia driver using these commands:

sudo apt install nvidia-common xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
sudo apt install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx xserver-xorg-core

Finally, run this command to re-configure the x server:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Make a system reboot so that changes take effect. Hope this solves your blank screen problem, good luck :)
