Tor Browser 5.0.2 has been released recently in a stable version that brings more important security updates to Firefox. NoScript has also been updated which includes fixes for duplicate icons that appear on both Unity and Gnome desktop environments.

Here are the latest updates in this new version:
  • Update Firefox to 38.2.1esr
  • Update NoScript to 2.6.9.36
  • Bug 16860: Avoid duplicate icons on Unity and Gnome 
  Tor Browser Bundle 5.0.2 PPA Installation

To install Tor Browser Bundle 5.0.2 under Ubuntu 15.04/14.10 or older, run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:upubuntu-com/tor-bundle 
sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install tor-browser

Start it via the Unity dash:

For 32-bit platforms, install Tor Browser Bundle 5.0.2 using these commands:

mkdir -p ~/Tor_Browser && cd Tor_Browser

tar xf tor-browser-32-5.0.2.tar.xz 
chmod +x ~/Tor_Browser/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser 
gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences executable-text-activation ask

Create desktop shortcut for Tor Browser using this command:

ln -s ~/Tor_Browser/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser ~/Desktop

For 64-bit platforms, use these commands:

mkdir -p ~/Tor_Browser && cd Tor_Browser 
wget https://goo.gl/3Voy0t --no-check-certificate -O tor-browser-64-5.0.2.tar.xz 
tar xf tor-browser-64-5.0.2.tar.xz 
chmod +x ~/Tor_Browser/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser 
gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences executable-text-activation ask
