In this tutorial, we are going to see how to install and enable Ubuntu desktop visual effects under Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet). To do so, you have to enable and try Ubuntu compiz 3D cube effect which will give your desktop a new look and feel.

1. Preparing Your System

Make sure your graphics card driver is installed. For safe and tested Nvidia drivers, you may enable the Nvidia proprietary driver by going to System Settings > Software & Updates > Additional Drivers:

Or you can install the latest Nvidia driver provided by xorg-edgers ppa by running these commands (install the driver at your own risk):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa 
sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install nvidia-346 nvidia-settings

2. Enabling Ubuntu Desktop Visual Effects 

Install Compiz and all its related packages using this command:

sudo apt-get install -y compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-plugins-extra

Open the Dash and search for CompizConfig Settings Manager by typing ccsm:

To enable the Desktop 3D Cube effect, open General Options > Desktop Size and set these values:
  • Horizontal Virtual Size --> 4
  • Vertical Virtual Size --> 1

Now enable these desktop effects:
  • Desktop Cube (click Disable Desktop Wall)
  • Rotate Cube (Resolve conflicts > Disable Switch to Viewport 1)

Finally, press Ctrl+Alt and Left Mouse button to start the 3D cube desktop effect and drag your desktop using your mouse:
