In this tutorial we will see an easy and useful tool called SimpleScreenRecorder that allows Ubuntu/Linux Mint users to record or capture screen. The application is written in QT and has a lot of features.

With SimpleScreenRecorder you can:
  • Record the entire screen
  • Record a fixed rectangle
  • Follow the cursor
  • Record OpenGL
This screen recorder supports many video/audio file formats such as MP4, WebM, MKV, H261/263/264, HDS, mov, FLV, DVD, 3GP, etc.

SimpleScreenRecorder Installation

For Ubuntu 14.10/14.04 or older, enter these commands from the Terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder 
sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-libav simplescreenrecorder

For Linux Mint 17.1 or any other Ubuntu-based distribution not supported by the PPA above, you can install SimpleScreenRecorder using these commands for 64-bit systems:

cd /tmp 
wget http://goo.gl/4PO7Px -O simplescreenrecorder_0.3.2-1_amd64.deb 
wget http://goo.gl/TMCglK -O simplescreenrecorder-lib_amd64.deb 
sudo dpkg -i --force-depends simplescreen*.deb 
sudo apt-get -f install

For 32-bit systems, run these commands:

cd /tmp 
wget http://goo.gl/1Y2J9j -O simplescreenrecorder_0.3.2-1_i386.deb 
wget http://goo.gl/RUjWlc -O simplescreenrecorder-lib_i386.deb 
sudo dpkg -i --force-depends simplescreen*.deb 
sudo apt-get -f install
