In this tutorial we are going to seee a useful tool called Aptik that allows Ubuntu users to backup and restore their applications, repositories (PPAs), application settings, themes, and icons.

By doing this, you will be able to easily restore them to your newly installed system after a Ubuntu format and reinstall.

Aptik can be installed under Ubuntu 14.10/14.04 or older via PPA. To do this, start the terminal and issue the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository -y  ppa:teejee2008/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install aptik

You can now start Aptik from Dash:

From the main window of the application select the backup directory or external usb drive to put your files in:

Then use any of the Backup button(s) to begin the backup process:

After reinstalling Ubuntu, you have to reinstall Aptik and now use the Restore button(s) to restore your packages from the backup folder you selected earlier.

Have a nice day :)
