Aard Dictionary is a a free offline dictionary that supports multiple languages. It can also be used to read most popular encyclopedias offline, such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary, WordNet, Wikispecies, and Wikiquote.

In this tutorial we will see how to install this useful application under Ubuntu 14.10/14.04 or older. To make the installation of Aard Dictionary easier, I added it to our PPA as shown below.

Aard Dictionary Installation

Open the terminal and run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:upubuntu-com/edu 
sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install aarddict

You can then start the application via Dash:

You can now download your desired dictionary from here, then add it to the application.

Aard Dictionary Removal

To fully uninstall Aard Dictionary from your system, enter these commands:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge 
sudo ppa-purge ppa:upubuntu-com/edu 
sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get purge aarddict*
