While I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.10 using VirtualBox under Windows 8.1, I got a screen filled with colors that prevented me from continue the installation of Ubuntu 14.10. This problem is caused by the kernel graphics preventing the computer from properly displaying video.

In this short tutorial, am gonna help you fix this problem with a simple trick. Here is a screenshot of the distorted screen that appears when trying to install Ubuntu 14.10 in VirtualBox:



Solution

Simply press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open the shell and then press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to the graphics mode. The kernel will now redetect your monitor and will display the proper resolution:



You can now continue the installation of Ubuntu 14.10.
