Package Converter is an Alien front-end GUI that allows users to easily convert between file formats used in software packaging by some Linux operating systems such as deb (Debian), rpm (RED Hat), slp (Stampede), pkg (Solaris), and tgz (Slackware) with support of lsb packages. The application is written in Realbasic and Python and it supports all alien parameter options. You can find more information about Package Converter along with its author here.

To make the installation of this useful application easier, we have added it to our PPA which is supported by the following Ubuntu/Linux Mint distributions:

  • Ubuntu 13.04/12.10/12.04/11.10
  • Linux Mint 14/13/12
Package Converter Installation

Open the terminal and enter these commands to install Package Converter in Ubuntu/Linux Mint:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:upubuntu-com/ppa 
sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install package-converter

You can then start the application via the Unity Dash or from the terminal with this command:


Package Converter Removal

In case you want to uninstall Package Converter from your system, enter these commands:

sudo apt-get remove package-converter 
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:upubuntu-com/ppa 
sudo apt-get update
