Skype has been updated recently to version 4.0 which brings more new features and changes. Among the key features in this latest release, we can find the following:

  • A new conversations/call view
  • Unified window
  • Improved audio/video quality, with adding support to more cameras, etc.
You can find complete changes here. In this tutorial, we will help you install Skype 4.0 via PPA, no need to install from Debian packages.

Skype 4.0 Installation

Uninstall the old version of Skype with these commands:

sudo apt-get purge skype skype-bin

sudo apt-get autoremove

Next, install Skype 4.0 in Ubuntu 12.04/11.10/11.04 with these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:upubuntu-com/chat

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install skype

You can now start Skype from the Unity Dash, then head to the About menu to make sure the latest version is well installed:
