We have recently seen how to install the phpBB bulletin board system under Ubuntu. Today we will see how to install the latest version of MyBB, a message board software, under Ubuntu 11.10/12.04 or older. If you haven't installed the LAMP web server under Ubuntu, you can find here a tutorial explaining this.

MyBB requires a MySQL database to store data, you can use phpMyAdmin to create it or use the following commands (Replace "12345" to any MySQL user password of your choice):

mysql -u root -p

create database mybb;

CREATE USER 'mybb'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY '12345';

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mybb.* TO 'mybb' IDENTIFIED BY '12345';

exit

These commands will create the following MySQL details:

  • hostname: localhost
  • MySQL database name: mybb
  • MySQL database user: mybb
  • MySQL database user password:  12345
These details will be used later during the installation of MyBB.

MyBB Installation (v1.6.6)

Open the terminal and download and install MyBB in the /var/www/mybb folder with the following commands:

cd /tmp && wget -O mybb_1606.zip http://goo.gl/XIhjv

sudo unzip mybb_1606.zip -d /var/www

sudo mv /var/www/Upload /var/www/mybb

sudo mv /var/www/mybb/inc/config.default.php /var/www/mybb/inc/config.php

sudo chmod a+rw /var/www/mybb/inc/settings.php

sudo chmod a+rw /var/www/mybb/inc/config.php

sudo chmod a+rw /var/www/mybb/cache/

sudo chmod a+rw /var/www/mybb/uploads/

sudo chmod a+rw /var/www/mybb/uploads/avatars/

Start now the installation of MyBB by opening this link:

http://localhost/mybb/install/

Then follow setup instructions. In the "Database Configuration" page, enter MySQL details we have mentioned above:

When you finish the installation of MyBB, remove the install directory with this command:

sudo rm -r /var/www/mybb/install

MyBB will be now accessible at this link:

http://localhost/mybb/

The admin area is here:

http://localhost/mybb/admin/
