Smuxi is a multi-platform IRC client that can run smoothly on GNOME powered systems. Smuxi allows to connect to multiple servers simultaneously, SSL connection support, HTTP / SOCKS proxy support, and the possibility to connect to multiple network protocols like IRC and Twitter. Under Ubuntu 11.10/12.04 or any older version of Ubuntu, you can install Smuxi with the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:meebey/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install smuxi

For Debian-based systems, you can install with these commands:

echo "deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/source.list

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get -t squeeze-backports install smuxi
