Aegisub is a powerful multi-platform subtitle editor that supports the following file formats:

ASS SSA SRT TXT TTXT SUB MKV MKA MKS


With Aegisub, you can create, via an easy to use GUI, your own subtitles or edit ready subtiltles to make them fit with your needs (adding more sentences, phrases, correct spelling errors, etc.). The program comes with a built-in video player that will facilitate the subtitle editing process. You can find here more information about this subtitle editing program.

In this page we will see how to install Aegisub in Ubuntu Oneiric, for other distributions, you can install it from source as described below.

Aegisub Installation

To install Aegisub under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, you need first to install all these dependencies from the terminal:

sudo apt-get install libglu1-mesa-dev libfontconfig1-dev libfreetype6-dev libwxbase2.8-dev intltool libwxgtk2.8-dev libhunspell-dev libasound2-dev libxext-dev libavcodec-dev libopenal-dev libavformat-dev libavutil-dev libpostproc-dev libswscale-dev liblua5.1-0-dev imagemagick yasm libass-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libglu1-mesa-dev libglib2.0-dev libpulse-dev 

Then install Aegisub with the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:zveroy/aegisub
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install aegisub

You can now start Aegisub from the Unity Dash:




You can also compile and install Aegisub from source with the following commands:

sudo apt-get install build-essential


cd /tmp && wget -O aegisub-2.1.9.tar.gz http://goo.gl/KoBQw


tar -xzvf aegisub-2.1.9.tar.gz && cd aegisub-2.1.9


./configure && make


sudo make install
