It's VLC 2.0 the upcoming version of the VLC media player that will show up very soon. VLC 2.0 will come up with many new features. Among these new features we can find the following:

  • Native Shaders Support
  • Improved Subtitle Management
  • More Video Codecs were Added
  • More Video Filters Can Now Be Transcoded
  • More File Formats Are Now Supported 
  • FFmpeg-mt Support, etc.

If you want to test this new version under Ubuntu, you can install the RC version with the PPA given below, but you have to expect some bugs when using an RC product.

To install VLC 2.0 RC1 under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, open the terminal and run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc


Update: The latest version of VLC 2.0 (Twoflower) is released, you can install it under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot with these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc
