In this tip we will see how to extract the contents of a .war file under Ubuntu. As you know, the WAR file format is a JAR file (aka web application archive) that allows to distribute Java servlets & classes, JavaServer pages, web pages, XML files, etc. that all constitutes what we call a web application.

Under a Linux-based system, Ubuntu for example, we may use the terminal to extract contents of a WAR file. Here is the command used:

jar -xvf file-name.war

Replace file-name.war with your own file name. The files will be extracted in the current terminal location.
