If you are annoyed by the Update Manager window that pops up at each system startup under Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), you can easily disable it with just one command from the terminal.

Getting Started

1. Open the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command to disable the Update Manager auto notification:

gconftool -s --type bool /apps/update-notifier/auto_launch false

2. To re-enable it, issue this command:

gconftool -s --type bool /apps/update-notifier/auto_launch true

You can also remove the Update Manager package from your computer completely, but this action is not highly recommended. To remove it, run this command:

sudo apt-get remove update-manager

If you want to restore it, run this command:

sudo apt-get install update-manager

That's it!
