In this tip we will help you move the close, minimize and maximize buttons to the right side of the window as in Windows operating systems. These buttons are displayed by default to the left side under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

To move these buttons to the right, open the terminal and run this command:

gconftool-2 --set "/apps/metacity/general/button_layout" --type string ":minimize,maximize,close"

Changes will occur instantly.

You can also use the Metacity Window Buttons utility to change positions of maximize, minimize and close buttons. Metacity Window Buttons gives you the possibility to move only a button to the right side and keep the other to the left, and so on.

To install it on Ubuntu 11.10, you need to install first this dependency:

sudo apt-get install python2.6

Then install the utility with these commands:

wget -O mwbuttons.deb http://goo.gl/KZXbW
sudo dpkg -i mwbuttons.deb

That's it!
