In this tutorial we will help you install the Cinnamon desktop environment under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, which can be used as a replacement to Unity. Cinnamon is a project started by Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint founder) which is a GNOME Shell fork having similarities with the GNOME 2 layout.
Cinnamon Installation
Under Ubuntu, run the following commands from the terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:merlwiz79/cinnamon-ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon cinnamon-session cinnamon-settings
Logout the current session, select Cinnamon from the login manager and log back in:
The project is still under development, not complete and you may encounter some bugs while using it.
