In this tip we will learn how to use the terminal to force a user to logout from an unresponsive user session. This tip is tested under Ubuntu and may work in other Debian-based distributions.

Getting Started

1. Open the terminal and run this command to list all running system processes:

ps -ef

2. In the returned outputs, locate the process named gnome-session and memorize its PID located in the second column:

3. To kill this process so that you force logout the current user session, run this command followed by the PID of the process in question:

kill PID

For my case, I have to run this command:

kill 1114

That's it!
