In this guide we will see how to install two desktop environments on Ubuntu 11.10. The first one is called Enlightenment and the other is called Openbox. These desktop environment can be used instead of the Unity interface, but I think not most of you will like them if you give visual effects much importance. While others will find these desktop environments convenient due to the speed they will experience while using them.

1. Enlightenment 

Enlightenment is a lightweight desktop environment with good looking interface. To install it on Ubuntu 11.10, run this sequence of commands from the terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hannes-janetzek/enlightenment-svn
sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install e17 detourious-theme 

At the login screen, select Enlightment and login to your session:

2. Openbox

Openbox is a bare-bone desktop environment and window manager that is lightweight and uses almost no system resources. This will make your desktop cleaner and faster. To install Openbox on Ubuntu 11.10, open the terminal and run this command:

sudo apt-get install openbox

To use the Openbox configuration tool , you can install it with these commands:

cd /tmp
wget -O obconf.deb http://goo.gl/dIhsh
sudo dpkg -i obconf.deb

At login screen, select  GNOME/Openbox or Openbox and login to your session:
