In this tip we will use an extension called Window Overlay Icons that allows to display icons in running windows to identify them when opening the Gnome Shell. The extension will be installed in Ubuntu 11.10 having the Gnome Shell interface. After the installation of this extension, your windows will be displayed as follows:


To install GNOME Shell Window Overlay Icons on Ubuntu 11.10, open the terminal and run this sequence of commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-windowoverlay-icons

Use now Alt+F2 r or simply log out and log back in.

Open now Gnome Tweak Tool. If you haven't installed it, then do with this command:

sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

In the main window of Gnome Tweak Tool, open the Shell Extensions tab and on the right turn on "WindowOverlay Icons Extension"

Open now Gnome Shell to see the difference:
