We have previously seen how to create a desktop shortcut via the terminal under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, which seemed not comfortable for some users. To make things easier, I will show you in this tutorial how to create a new launcher directly from the context menu (right-click menu) using a very simple bash script.

Getting Started

1. Open the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run these commands to download and move the "Create Launcher" script to your "nautilus-scripts" folder:

wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47950494/Create-Launcher
cp Create-Launcher ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts
chmod +x ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/Create-Launcher
mv ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/Create-Launcher ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/"Create Launcher"

2. Right click now on your desktop and select Scripts > Create Launcher to create a desktop shortcut:

To create a shortcut in the current folder where you make a right-click, then install this script instead:

wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47950494/Create%20Launcher
cp "Create Launcher" ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts
chmod +x ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/"Create Launcher"
