The stable release of  Ubuntu 11.10 Oneric Ocelot is now available for download. However, while using this release, I have noticed that the screensaver is not enabled when the computer remains idle for a specific period of time, what is shown is only a blank screen.

If you want to display a screensaver when your system is idle under Ubuntu 11.10, you need to install the xscreensaver package. Installing this package requires the uninstallation of the gnome-screensaver package.

Warning: Use this tip at your own risk!

Open the terminal and remove the gnome-screensaver package with this command:

sudo apt-get remove gnome-screensaver

To install the xscreensaver package and its plug-ins, run this command:

sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-gl-extra xscreensaver-data-extra

Now we need to make the xscreensaver start automatically after system startup. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Open Startup Applications via the Unity dash:

2. Click the Add button:

3. Enter now these details, then click Add:

Name: Screensaver
Command: xscreensaver -nosplash

One last step consist now of customizing your screensaver. So, open xscreensaver using the Unity dash:

Then customize the screensaver the way you like:

That's it!
