The latest version of Cairo-Dock was released (2.4). This new version comes with a new option that allows Ubuntu users to log on to Cairo Dock in the login screen so as to get rid of the Unity interface. Here are some of the new features for this latest release:

  • Power-Manager applet supports now any platform
  • Help applet added
  • Better integration in XFCE desktop environments
  • More new DBus methods for better and easier interaction with the dock
  • Dock is now compatible with a Compiz-standalone environment
  • New "Impulse" applet that allows to add dance effect to your dock
  • Many bug fixes, etc.

To install Cairo Dock on Ubuntu 11.04/11.10, open the terminal and run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cairo-dock-team
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins

You can then start Cairo Dock from the Unity Dash:

To replace the Unity interface with Cairo Dock, then select the Cairo Dock session at login screen by selecting either Cairo-Dock (with Gnome and effects) or Cairo-Dock (with Gnome and without effect) from the settings menu:
