Audio Recorder is an excellent application with a simple GUI that allows Ubuntu users to record audio coming from your system sound card, microphone, media players (Banshee, RhytmBox, Amarok, etc.), Skype calls, as well as streaming audio from web browsers.

Audio Recorder can be easily integrated in the GNOME 2.x/3.x and Unity interfaces. Recorded sound can be saved in the following formats:

  • OGG
  • FLAC
  • MP2
  • MP3
  • WAV
  • SPX

Audio Recorder Installation

To install Audio Recorder on Ubuntu 11.10/11.04, open the terminal and run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:osmoma/audio-recorder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audio-recorder

You can then start it via the Unity dash:


The recorded audio files are accessible in the /home/username/Audio folder. To store files in a new folder or to get more configuring options, click Additional settings:

You can also start, pause, and stop audio recording by clicking the icon of Audio Recorder displayed in the top bar:
