Indywiki is an application with GUI that makes it easy browsing Wikipedia from your Desktop. The Indywiki window is split into two sections, one for images related to the searched topic, the other for the topic text and links. Indywiki also offers the possibility to translate text between many languages.

In this guide we will see how to install Indywiki on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. You can also install the application on older versions of Ubuntu.

Indywiki Installation

Install first these dependencies:

sudo apt-get install python-qt4 python-nodebox-web

Then via the terminal, run these commands to install Indywiki on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot:

wget http://mirror.pnl.gov/ubuntu//pool/universe/i/indywiki/indywiki_0.9.9.1-6_all.deb
sudo dpkg  -i indywiki_0.9.9.1-6_all.deb

You can then start Indywiki via the terminal with this command:


To create a desktop shortcut for Indywiki, open the terminal and run this command:

gnome-desktop-item-edit --create-new ~/Desktop

Then insert these details:

Name: Indywiki
Command: indywiki

Set any icon of your choice for the shortcut, then click OK. The shortcut can be then dragged and dropped in the Unity app launcher.
