If you select the Gnome Shell interface instead of Unity under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, you will notice that after rebooting your system, the Unity interface is restored. If you still haven't installed Gnome Shell on Ubuntu 11.10, you can do with this command from the terminal:

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

To make the Gnome Shell interface loads permanently, then follow these quick steps:

1. Open the Terminal and run this command to make the Gnome Shell as your default interface:

sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s gnome-shell

2. If you want to restore the Unity interface, run simply this command:

sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s ubuntu

That's it!
