In this tip we will see how to remove the username from the system tray under Ubuntu 11.04. This will help you gain more space for other applications. There are two ways for removing the username from the top panel, but we will use the easiest one which can be done via the terminal, the other consists of using the gconf-editor.

To hide the username, open the terminal and run this command:

gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display --type int 0

The result is instantaneous:

To restore the username to the system tray, run this command:

gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display --type int 1
