In this tutorial we will help you create a desktop shortcut to a link under Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. We will show you how to create a desktop shortcut to a web page using three different browsers: Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.

1. Firefox

Open the terminal and run this command to create a new launcher:

gnome-desktop-item-edit --create-new ~/Desktop

Use now these details:

Name: Give any name of your choice for your link
Command:  firefox URL

Replace the URL with any link of your choice (firefox http://www.upubuntu.com, for example). Also you can assign any icon of your choice to your shortcut.

Your shortcut link will now appear on your desktop and will open in Firefox.

2. Google Chrome

Use the same command to create a new launcher, then enter this command:

google-chrome http://www.upubuntu.com

3. Opera

For Opera, use this command:

opera http://www.upubuntu.com

For Opera 12, use simply this command:

opera-next http://www.upubuntu.com

That's it!
