In this guide, we will see how to install DivX 6.1.1 codec for Linux on Ubuntu (11.04/11.10) and Debian Squeeze.

 By installing the DivX Codec, you will be able to play compressed video files (AVI, for example) using your media player like VLC, for example.



  • Ubuntu
1. Start the Terminal and run these commands to download the DivX 6.1.1 Codec:

cd /tmp
wget http://download.divx.com/labs/divx611-20060201-gcc4.0.1.tar.gz
tar -zxvf divx611-20060201-gcc4.0.1.tar.gz
cd divx611-20060201-gcc4.0.1


2. To start the installation of DivX under Ubuntu, run this command:

sudo ./install.sh

4. Press Q and type Yes to accept the agreement, then press Enter to start the installation of the codec.

  • Debian Squeeze
For Debian Squeeze, use these commands:

su -
cd /tmp
wget http://download.divx.com/labs/divx611-20060201-gcc4.0.1.tar.gz
tar -zxvf divx611-20060201-gcc4.0.1.tar.gz
cd divx611-20060201-gcc4.0.1


To start the installation of DivX under Debian Squeeze, issue this command:

./install.sh

4. Press Q and type Yes to accept the agreement.

You can now play all media formats supported by DivX using VLC. To install VLC on Ubuntu, use this command:

sudo apt-get install vlc

For Debian Squeeze, use these commands:

su -
apt-get install vlc
