MEncoder is command line video decoding tool that can convert all formats supported by MPlayer. FFmpeg, in turn, is also a set of tools for converting, recording, streaming, and playing audio & video contents.

After trying with no avail to install Mencoder and FFmpeg on Ubuntu 11.04 using these commands:

sudo apt-get install mencoder
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

I found a way that helped me force install these great tools on Ubuntu 11.04. Use the instructions given below at your own risk.

 Mencoder Installation

1. Open the Terminal and run this command:

sudo aptitude install --without-recommends mencoder

Read carefully given instructions and select the appropriate action.

FFmpeg Installation

1. Via the Terminal run this command:

sudo aptitude install --without-recommends ffmpeg

Read carefully given instructions and select appropriate actions.
