Instantbird is a cross-platform instant messaging client that allows users to connect to a variety of social networks from their desktop. This client can also run via a USB stick. Here are some of the social networks supported by Instantbird:

Yahoo, Google Talk, AIM, MSN, Facebook, Twitter, IRC, ICQ, etc.

Here are some of its features:

  • Tabbed-browsing support.
  • Add-on & theme support.
  • Drag 'n' Drop feature, and so on.

To install Instantbird on Ubuntu, download it first here (currently v1.0). Then extract the archive file using your default archive manager to any folder of your choice. Double-click now the "instantbird" file to start the application, click Run in the dialog box.

Then follow given instructions to add an account:

You should bear in mind that this project is still new and you may get some bugs while running it, especially with the Unity interface for Ubuntu 11.04. You can notify the developer of any bug here.
