Google Translate is an online service that allows web users to translate between many languages. If you want to use this service without opening your web browser (remote use), you can install Translate-me, which is a lightweight program that allows Ubuntu users to translate languages from their own desktops.

To install Translate-me on Ubuntu (11.10 / 11.04 / 10.10 / 10.04), issue these commands from the terminal:

 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get install translate-me

You can then start it via the Ubuntu 11.04 dash:

For users of Ubuntu 10.04/10.10, the application can be started in the Accessories category.
