SparkleShare is a free open source sharing software that allows users to sync files in the cloud. Based on the GIT system, SparkleShare can be used as an alternative to Dropbox. In this tutorial, we will see how to install SparkleShare on Ubuntu 11.04.

To install the stable version of SparkleShare on Ubuntu 11.04/10.10/10.04, run these commands via the Terminal:

mkdir -p ~/.ssh

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:warp10/sparkleshare

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install sparkleshare libwebkit1.1-cil git-core

The folder created in the first command is necessary to prevent SparkleShare from crashing.

To integrate SparkleShare on Nautilus, run also this command:

sudo apt-get install python-nautilus

You can also download the source code here, then install it using these commands:

./configure –prefix=/usr

make

sudo make install

Once launched, SparkleShare's icon will be displayed in the notification area, click it to select actions:
