We have previously seen how to install Wine (1.3) on Ubuntu to run Windows apps and games on Ubuntu. Today, we are going to see another application called PlayOnLinux, which also allows users to run Windows apps and games on Ubuntu. PlayOnLinux is based on Wine.

PlayOnLinux Installation

To install PlayOnLinux on Ubuntu 11.04/10.10/10.04, issue these commands from the Terminal:

wget -q "http://deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -O- | sudo apt-key add -

sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_`lsb_release -s -c`.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install playonlinux

You can then start PlayOnLinux via Dash:

Or run it from the Games category. In the main interface of PlayOnLinux, click Install to add apps and games:

Select any category of your choice, select the game or app you want to install, then hit Apply:

Then follow setup instructions. Enjoy!
