Synapse is a fast launcher written in Vala that allows Ubuntu users to quickly search files, open programs, and run actions by simply typing a few keywords in the search field.

This launcher is very light and fast because it is powered by the Zeitgeist engine. Here are some of its features:

  • Search all things logged by the Zeitgeist engine
  • Restart, log out, hibernate, or Turn off your computer
  • Find word definitions (Dictionary)
  • Search and open quickly installed programs, documents, files, etc.

To install Synapse on Ubuntu 11.04/10.10/10.04, run the following commands from the Terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:synapse-core/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install synapse

Run now these commands to install more Zeitgeist data providers:

 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:zeitgeist/ppa

 sudo apt-get update

 sudo apt-get install zeitgeist-fts-extension zeitgeist-datasource-bzr zeitgeist-datasource-emacs zeitgeist-datasource-eog zeitgeist-datasource-geany zeitgeist-datasource-gedit zeitgeist-datasource-rhythmbox zeitgeist-datasource-totem zeitgeist-datasource-vim

To launch Synapse, search "synapse" in the dash:

Its icon will be displayed in the notification area. To bring up the user interface for Synapse, press simply Ctrl + Spacebar keys.
