Chars Indicator is an indicator applet for Ubuntu that allows users to easily insert some special characters that are not available in your keyboard. It can be used as a replacement for Character Map.

Chars Indicator Installation

To install Chars Indicator on Ubuntu 11.10/11.04/10.10/10.04, launch the terminal and run these commands to install git-core:

sudo apt-get install git-core
git clone https://github.com/tobyS/indicator-chars.git

Create now in your Home folder a new file and rename it as ".indicator-chars", you can create it via the Terminal with this command:

> .indicator-chars

You need next to fill this file with all special characters you want to use with Chars Indicator. The file is hidden, to show it, press simply Ctrl+H in the Home folder. You can copy special characters from this website.

To start Chars Indicator, run this command from the Terminal:


Its icon will appear in the system tray, click it and select a character to copy it:

To paste the character on any other program or text editor, click the mouse middle button (wheel button), The Ctrl+V combination won't work to paste special characters.
