In this tutorial, we will see how to put different wallpapers for each workspace on Ubuntu 11.04.

Get Started

1. Let's first disable desktop icons. From the Terminal, run this command:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop false

2. Run now these commands to install CompizConfig Settings Manager:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
sudo apt-get install compiz-fusion-plugins-extra

3. Open CompizConfig Settings Manager using the dash by searching "CCSM":

4.Under Utility, click Wallpaper.

5. Check on Enable Wallpaper, then add background images for the different workspaces you have using the New button.

6. Your workspaces will now have different wallpapers.

If you want to restore your desktop icons and disable wallpapers set for each workspace, then issue this command from the Terminal:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop true
