If you want to prevent removable drive icons from appearing on your desktop on Ubuntu 11.04 (also applicable on Ubuntu 10.10/10.04), you can easily hide them in just a few steps.

These icons appear on your desktop once you connect a removable media (USB flash drive, for example) to your computer. So, to hide these icons, follow these simple instructions:

1. Press Alt+F2 and search for "gconf-editor" and open it.

2. Open now this path:

apps > nautilus > desktop

3. On the right side of the window, check off volumes_visible, then close the window.

4. From now on, removable drive icons will no longer appear on your desktop, but they are still accessible via the file explorer.
