In this tip, we will see how to hide desktop icons as well as disabling the desktop right-click menu from the Terminal. This will allow you to display a clean and neat desktop so that your wallpaper looks better.

Under Ubuntu 11.04, launch the Terminal and issue this command to disable desktop icons:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop false

The desktop right-click menu will also be disabled.

To re-enable desktop icons and restore the right-click menu, run simply this command:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop true

That's it!
