The command we will see today will help us do two actions at the same time for an archive file. We will see how to download and extract an archive file at the same time. To be able to do this under Ubuntu, we will resort to the "WGET" Linux command.

Under Ubuntu 11.04/10.10/10.04, open the Terminal and issue this command:

wget archive-url -O - | tar xfz -

You have to replace "archive-url" in the command given above with the URL of the archive file you want to download and extract simultaneously. Here is an example:

wget http://launchpad.net/schooltool/1.6/1.6.0/+download/schooltool-1.6.0.tar.gz -O - | tar xfz -
