In this tutorial, we will see how to make Ubuntu turn on your numlock automatically when the login screen appears. The tip is tested under ubuntu 11.04/10.10/10.04.

1. Via the Terminal, install first these packages:

 sudo apt-get install libkde3support4
 sudo apt-get install numlockx

2. Edit now this file using this command:

 sudo gedit /etc/gdm/Init/Default

3. Then add the following lines just before "exit 0":

if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then
 exec /usr/bin/numlockx on

Save your file and close it, then reboot your system. Your numlock will be enabled automatically once your reach the login screen.
