In this tip, we will see how to use the Ubuntu Terminal to record sound coming from your microphone, no need to use third-party software. The commands given below are operational for sound cards using the ALSA sound driver. The quality of recorded sound will vary depending on the quality of the microphone used.

So, turn on your microphone, launch the Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), then issue this command:

sox -t alsa default ./recording.wav

The sound file will be recorded in the WAV format. To record the audio file using the FLAC format, then issue this command:

sox -t alsa default ./recording.flac

To stop recording, simply press Ctrl+C. The audio file will be saved in the Home folder.
