If you have encountered boot problems after installing Ubuntu on your system, you can try the Boot Repair tool, which will help you fix Ubuntu boot issues. Boot Repair allows the following:

  • Reinstallation of the bootloader (GRUB)
  • Restore bootsector (MBR) backup, if available

Also Boot Repair will help you fix boot issues of other operating systems managed by the GRUB loader. Boot Repair can be used directly from the Ubuntu desktop, live-USB, or live-CD.

Boot Repair Installation

To install Boot Repair on Ubuntu 11.04/10.10/10.04, launch the terminal and issue these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install boot-repair-ubuntu

The tool can be accessed later via the System > Administration section (Ubuntu 10.04/10.10). For Ubuntu 11.04 (Unity), you can launch this tool via the dash (type "boot repair" without quotes in the search box).
