In contrary to Windows, Ubuntu is not configured by default to provide notification messages for users when a USB device is connected.

To be able to get notifications for connected USB devices under Ubuntu, you can try 'udev-notify' which allows to display visual alerts on your Ubuntu desktop when a USB device is connected.

Once installed, this small utility will work in the background, and each time a USB device (USB flash drive, camera, smartphone, etc) is connected, a notification bubble will pop-up.

To install udev-notify on Ubuntu 10.04/10.10/11.04, click here to download its deb package.
